Background History

The ministry energy and minerals (MEM) is one of the eighteen Government of Tanzania’s ministries. MEM is charged with the mandate to manage and administer the energy and mineral sectors through the energy policy of 2003 and minerals policy of 1997.

The ministry of energy and minerals (MEM was established under the minister (Discharge of ministerial function) Act, Cap.299 revised edition 2002, notice No.20 of 2008 which came in to operation on 13th February, 2008 with the following responsibilities, development of energy and mineral policies, programmes, projects and their implementation, performance improvement and development of human resources and coordinate, direct supervise and monitor institutions under the ministry.

In the last two decade the Government of the united republic of Tanzania has therefore recognized the great potential that the mineral and energy resources of the country can contribute towards rapid national economic recovery and development. In response to this need the government has put in place an internationally competitive and conducive investment environment of the mineral and energy sectors.

Because of the aforementioned efforts the energy sector has witnessed a tremendous growth in the electricity sub sector as well as oil and gas exploration. The development of the songosongo gas pipeline situated in kilwa, which is now in progress, stands out as an obvious witness to this growth. In the mineral sector, since the 1998 direct foreigner investment in the mining industry has reached over US$ 1.4 billion. Four large scale gold mines have been opened in the last five years.
